Spring Quilt Market 2012: Rowan – Melissa White, V&A Museum

Camille by Melissa White, which will also ship in July, is another collection where the botanical prints take on a new look depending on the colors used. Rich greys, loden green and mustard play together quite nicely to offer a modern sensibility.

Spring Quilt Market 2012: FreeSpirit/Westminster – Valori Wells

Stepping into Valori Wells’ booth was like stepping in to a summer picnic, with fabric EVERYWHERE, including the floor! Somehow I resisted the urge to climb into her hammock filled with quilts, but I was definitely tempted. Valori’s nature-inspired designs and friendly demeanor really seem to embody the idea of a free spirit!

Spring Quilt Market 2012: FreeSpirit/Westminster – Amy Butler

I was very excited to be tasked with photographing the Westminster/FreeSpirit designer booths; they are always such incredible displays of creativity and inspiration, and this year was no exception! As always, Amy Butler‘s space was immaculately styled and a perfect representation of her new line, Cameo.

Cameo seems to marry the Asian-inspired aesthetic of Amy’s last few

Bird Textile

Bird Textile in Australia hand-screenprints a range of fabrics and also offer a full range of products made from them. They print on certified organic cottons using water-based inks, and their studios are even solar powered! Each of the prints you see here is available on voile for garments, quilting cotton, and heavyweight drill for home decor, and each comes in a few colors. The fabrics are available by the meter, in fat quarter “star” packs as shown above, in remnant packs, kits, bias binding, and covered buttons.

Q&A: Sheer Fabrics

Hi! I am new to the fabric world and I was looking for some good tips on what is the best sheer or gauze fabric. I keep seeing the term voile used and organza. I want something that is really sheer and with a great color print. Any ideas where I can get this or who makes it? Thanks!!!

– Katie S.

Hi Katie! “Best” would depend on what you’re going to use it for and what kind of fiber you are after. Most sheer fabrics are going to be cotton, silk, or synthetic. Since you’re new to fabric, I assume

Blog Tour: Amy Butler on the New Soul Blossoms Substrates

Recently Amy Butler and her assistant Mallory got in touch to see if I’d be willing to kick off a blog tour for Amy’s new fabrics. Of course I immediately said yes! I know everyone is thrilled to see Amy’s designs on the new apparel-friendly substrates of rayon, corduroy, and voile for the first time, and to see the field of organic fabrics getting even more varied and spectacular. Here’s Amy telling us about each new substrate and sharing gorgeous inspirational images of these fabrics at work. See the end of the post for PDF files that will show you exactly

New Release Tuesday: 6/28/11 Part 1

New Release Tuesday is my periodic roundup of new fabric sightings (mostly quilting cottons). These fresh arrivals have started to arrive in fabric shops and are ready to buy. Retailers, as always, if you carry any of these collections, let us know in the comments.

Wow, I’ve put this off so long that the new releases have piled up big time! So this week, it’s NRT in two parts. Here’s part II.

Spring Quilt Market 2011: Westminster/Rowan – Amy Butler

Amy Butler‘s fabric was some of the first fabric that I ever bought, so I was thrilled to meet her in person and see the new lines.

The booth featured Amy’s new line, Organic Soul, features prints “derived and rescued” from Amy’s Soul Blossoms collection. These prints will be available in FIVE substrates: corduroy, a silky rayon, organic quilting cotton, voile, and laminated cotton. No joke- corduroy and rayon! Apparel sewers, get excited! The fine-wale corduroy was really my favorite — it would make a lovely backing
