The Nani Iro 2013 collection by Naomi Ito is starting to arrive in stores. Along with the double gauze, most prints come in a unique colorway on a hemp-cotton blend. The Nani Iro website seems to grow and grow with each season, there is now a web shop through which you can purchase the fabrics and a wide variety of finished goods and sewing books and notions. There is also a new collection called Itsura, featuring very lovely yarn-dyed apparel fabrics (see the two images at the very bottom). I don’t know

Fall Quilt Market 2012: Kokka

Kokka’s distinctive prints are always one of the high points at Market.  A portion of the booth was dedicated to Ellen Luckett Baker‘s new line Stamped (which is new in stores now). Inspired by hand-prints, the simple shapes and designs are perfectly suited to the cotton-linen blend fabric and the amazing array of colors. Ellen’s fabric was made up into an incredible variety of quilts and bags.  Look for Stamped in stores in early 2013.

Spring Quilt Market 2012: Seven Islands

Seven Islands, the wonderful folks who distribute Kokka, Nani Iro, Kiyohara, and Echino, is a perennial oasis at Quilt Market. I find that very few sewing and quilting enthusiasts can refute the quasi-magical properties of Japanese fabric companies. The major barrier is price but really, the golden ratio between quality, color and design makes it hard to deny that they’re very worth it.

This market was a special one as Melody Miller, Heather Ross, and Estuko Furuya (Echino) all had new collections to show. I could go on but I will leave you with two words

Nani Iro 2012

Waltz }

Nani Iro has her own website and webshop now (or maybe she always has, and I’ve somehow missed it). Her 2012 collection is up there now and of course it’s gorgeous. These are all double gauze prints with the exception of Element Collage, which is a knit, and Peaceful Cooing, which comes on both basecloths. Each print comes in a handful of colorways. Matatabi has most, if not all of the collection available now.

Nani Iro A/W 2011

Nani Iro Autumn/Winter 2011 fabrics are out, and Miss Matatabi is the first shop I know of to have them! The collection marks the introduction of a new basecloth, cotton viyella, which Matatabi describes as a soft, lightweight cotton twill.

Free patterns (in Japanese) for the collection here.

Q&A: Sheer Fabrics

Hi! I am new to the fabric world and I was looking for some good tips on what is the best sheer or gauze fabric. I keep seeing the term voile used and organza. I want something that is really sheer and with a great color print. Any ideas where I can get this or who makes it? Thanks!!!

– Katie S.

Hi Katie! “Best” would depend on what you’re going to use it for and what kind of fiber you are after. Most sheer fabrics are going to be cotton, silk, or synthetic. Since you’re new to fabric, I assume

Spring Quilt Market 2011: Kokka/Seven Islands

Seven Islands is the U.S. distributor of Kokka fabric and other Japanese fabrics and notions.

They were showing the new colors and patterns of Echino, which includes some favorite patterns in new colors:

Some of the patterns are available on a woven nylon substrate, which would be great for bags or raincoats.
