Fall Quilt Market 2012: Michael Miller – Basics and Brights

It’s the economy, it’s the modern quilt movement, it’s the trend … whether it’s one of these or all of these things, the theme of this market was definitely Back to Basics. Several companies emphasized solids and versatile basics, and just the pure joy of color color color. Having fabrics with longer shelf lives is not only for the manufacturer’s benefit — it’s something I often hear retailers, designers, and consumers wishing for these days. Michael Miller’s variation on this theme was a happy and bright one, with some trendy

Fall Quilt Market 2012: Michael Miller – Bekko by Trenna Travis

The last designer enclave on Michael Miller Island was the one that created perhaps the most buzz at Market, since it marks such a departure for Michael Miller. Trenna Travis‘ Bekko marks their entrée into home decor fabrics. Bekko’s basecloth is a lovely cotton sateen that hits that sweet spota — it’s intended for light home decor like pillows, window dressings, kitchen and tabletop textiles, yet it’s light enough for quilting, apparel (like jackets, skirts), and all manner of crafts. Bekko feels preppy, yet fresh — easy, basic geometrics (and solids)

Fall Quilt Market 2012: Michael Miller – Patty Young

Patty Young introduced her new line of quilting cotton called Textured Basics. While it is quilting cotton in terms of weight and feel, the fabric is overprinted with faux texture that makes the fabric look like a canvas. Tricky, tricky.  The faux texture creates the illusion of an added dimension on the surface of the fabric (you can see it most clearly in the picture below). Textured Basics will be available starting in November. In the spirit of “keep it simple” that permeated this market, Patty Young is also introducing a line of

Fall Quilt Market 2012: Michael Miller – Laura Gunn

Next was Laura Gunn‘s booth.  Featuring her latest line for Michael Miller, Cosmos, which includes panel prints.  Laura’s painterly prints have a different feel than a lot of fabric on the market. Light and airy in spirit, but saturated in color, Cosmos is a lovely combination of large scale floral prints and plaids and dots. Cosmos is available in stores now.

Fall Quilt Market 2012: Michael Miller – Patty Sloniger

In 2011, Michael Miller partnered with Spoonflower to launch Project Selvage. Project Selvage was an opportunity for designers to make the jump from Spoonflower to being a licensed designer for Michael Miller. Patty Sloniger was the  winner of Project Selvage with her collection Backyard Baby.  At Market, her booth was centered on her collection Les Amis.  In a dawn colorway and a dusk colorway, Les Amis includes fun animal prints, geometric patterns, and my favorite, a wood grain line print. Find Les Amis in stores starting in November.

Spring Quilt Market 2012: Michael Miller – Designers

I’m (finally!) wrapping up Spring Quilt Market coverage with Michael Miller‘s designer booths. Keli covered the in-house collections, while Lauren got the designer booths — and, even though I forgot to ask, she got MM’s main, award-winning display. (Thanks, Lauren!) The Portland and NYC Modern Quilt Guild’s collectively created quilts showed off Michael Miller’s Cotton Couture Solids beautifully, and the now-traditional “live Pinterest” color inspiration wall was one of the main attractions.

Spring Quilt Market 2012: Michael Miller In-House Collections

Michael Miller came on strong with its bright and cheery presence at Quilt Market. Not only did they showcase some fantastic new licensed collections, but they also debuted some exceptionally fun in-house collections which focus on the color stories they have been providing for the past few years as well as continuing to be a destination for soft, bright, and irreverent basics and children’s motifs.

If we thought birds were gone, I think most people will find that they only flew south for

Quilting Solids Roundup

Solids have gained (re-gained, maybe) a lot of respect as a quilting fabric in recent years. There’s no better proof of that than the abundance of choices on the market now. Manufacturers small and large are offering their own unique palettes. I thought a little overview of what’s available these days might be useful for color fanatics who are looking for just the right shade of this or that color. For this post, I am listing plain weave quilting weight cottons only — we’ll leave twills, voiles, sateens, lawns, flannels, etc. for another day. I’ve also included the number of

Fall Quilt Market 2011: Michael Miller – Backyard Baby by Patty Sloniger

Earlier this year, Michael Miller and Spoonflower launched Project Selvage, an online fabric design competition. The competition was fierce, and Houstonite Patty Sloniger emerged victorious! This market was the launch of her collection with Michael Miller. The competition theme was baby boy, so those fabrics were produced, and Patty also designed a baby girl themed collection to go along with it. Their names are Backyard Baby and Bella Butterfly, and they’re all about backyard explorations on a beautiful breezy day.
