Seven Islands on Facebook

kiyohara-cats

In the past it has been difficult to find out about new Japanese fabrics, but the web presence of the Japanese companies has really been increasing lately. Seven Islands, U.S. distributor for Kokka, Cosmo, Kiyohara, and more, has been on Facebook for a few months now, posting their new Japanese fabrics regularly. These are just some of my favorites plucked from the stream. They probably going to be shown at Spring Quilt Market (so I can get more details on the designers and basecloths) and available in stores soon

Echino Jacquards

Echino Big Blossoms and Birds Fucshia/Natural Jacquard

At Fall Quilt Market as everyone exchanged hot tips on things to see, there was lots of excited whispering, “Echino jaquards! Echino jacquards! Echino! Jaquards!” They are finally arriving in U.S. stores for all your upholstery and other heavyweight woven needs. Can you imagine an entire Echino sofa?

Thanks to The Stitch Lab in Austin for sharing their pics. They are diehard Echino fans so of course they have them all.

Kokka Faces of Beauty

salmon-dog-oxford-fabric-by-Kokka-from-Japan-171970-1

Someone at Kokka must have a Boston Terrier. This fabric just cracks me up. The little stars are a nice touch too. Available at Fabricworm in turquoise and pink, though these images are from the Hong Kong-based Modes4U who has just the pink version.

Echino Fall 2012

DSC_0055

Some lost photos from Quilt Market! How I could let Echino fall through the cracks, I don’t know, but we’re all here together now and that’s what’s important. This season Etsuko Furuya is simultaneously releasing the latest iteration of her nature-themed collection AND more Ni-co, which is the more simple, graphic transportation-and-objects collection. We’re also getting some Decoro home dec prints on linen, oilcloth, and … mostexcitingnewsofquiltmarket, jacquards (that’s a link to ginapina‘s photo)! I’m not sure when those will be out, but I’m sure I’ll sense it, like a loyal dog

Muddy Works by Tomotake

I misidentifed this collection at Quilt Market as Nani Iro (thanks to Miss Matatabi for the info), so I am posting to make amends and also because they’re wonderful fabrics worth another look. Muddy Works is by husband and wife design team Tomotake, and the simple geometric designs are printed on double gauze, quilted double gauze, cotton-linen blend, and cotton sheeting. I’ve only seen the double gauze and cotton sheeting show up in U.S. shops (and they seem to be going fast — Pink

Fall Quilt Market 2012: Kokka – Melody Miller

Do you remember that scene in Amélie when the former occupant of Amélie’s apartment is reunited with his boyhood cigar box full of treasures? If so, you know a bit of how it felt to be in Melody Miller‘s booth this market. She had my childhood on those shelves and under that tree. It was, umm, kind of emotional! Sure, I collect vintage fabric and have bought back lots of 70s toys and books for my own kids, but the living room/kitchen combo that Melody and friends created was

Fall Quilt Market 2012: Kokka

Kokka’s distinctive prints are always one of the high points at Market.  A portion of the booth was dedicated to Ellen Luckett Baker‘s new line Stamped (which is new in stores now). Inspired by hand-prints, the simple shapes and designs are perfectly suited to the cotton-linen blend fabric and the amazing array of colors. Ellen’s fabric was made up into an incredible variety of quilts and bags.  Look for Stamped in stores in early 2013.

Preview: Stamped by Ellen Luckett Baker for Kokka

Ellen Luckett Baker (author of the blog The Long Thread, the book 1, 2, 3 Sew, and my kind helper outer at Spring Quilt Market this year) will be releasing her second fabric collection with (cue angel choir) Kokka! It’s called “Stamped,” and it’s inspired by the handmade, block-printed look. There will be six prints in three different colorways for a total of 18 designs, printed on Kokka’s signature, versatile cotton/linen blend. It will be rolled out at
