Melissa Swansey Nicholson of Vineyard Haven, MA sells vintage-inspired designs on Etsy under the name oliverhenry. Her goods are printed on 100% certified organic cotton or 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper. This new collection which I just spotted via Facebook is available for sale through her Spoonflower shop.

Wow, turns out I really like this theme of Geek Chic! The designers did a great job and now the round of 100 is open for public voting. I picked like 16, but I think Spirographic by Kateaurelia, above, is my superfavorite. Fabric8, if you didn’t know, is a collaboration between Robert Kaufman Fabrics and Spoonflower, and the winner of the contest will get a fabric collection with RK.

Some fortuitous Pinteresting led me to fabrics by Jolby, a collaborative design and illustration studio in Portland, Oregon. They are printed by Spoonflower and available through Jolby’s Etsy shop along with their prints, paintings, mugs, and other miscellany.

Maria in Sydney, Australia handprints fabrics under the name Blueberry Ash. The linen and cotton fabrics are printed with water-based inks and sold on Etsy to a worldwide audience. Maria is also involved with the company Digital Fabrics, which I will have to add to the list of digital print bureaus!

{ this print in three colorways is a collaboration between Wiksten and Helen Dealtry }

Designer Jenny Gordy of Wiksten has prints from last year’s spring-summer collection available to print on demand from Spoonflower. You don’t see a lot of prints on Spoonflower specifically designed with fashion sewing in mind (at least I don’t, but please direct me to them if you do!), so these are wonderful to see. They would of course be perfect printed on silk and made into a Wiksten tank.

Advanced Digital Textiles (Monroe, NC) can print on virtually any type of fabric with their variety of inks, dyes, and processes. They can print up to a whopping 132″ wide, and offer a variety of pre- and post-treatments. It looks like they have a five-yard minimum. Their parent company is a North Carolina rotary engraver, so they can help you with mass production too.

Bergamot Studio (Vashon, WA) specializes in reactive inks for cottons and linens, and acid inks for silk. Owner Kassana Holden has 25 years experience in the apparel and home furnishings​ industries and working with textile design studios. She works with with hobbyists, crafters, and professionals to print permanent and brilliant results.

SC Fabric Printing (Hollywood, CA) looks like they can also print on virtually any fabric type, including silks, cottons, and synthetics. The website lists their their starting price at $25/yard, no minimum, which puts them in the hobbyist price range ballpark. Their suite of services includes patternmaking and sewing, so they can take you from print concept to finished product.

I think that each of these U.S. printers can also be as hands-on or hands-off as you’d like (and like to pay for), meaning they can also help design the print itself and work with you to achieve the colors you want.

Here are two European printers that I have posted about before, but the info bears repeating:

Stoff-schmei.de (Berlin, Germany) has German and English versions of their site now, and it also looks like they ship internationally. They print with reactive dyes onto cottons, rayon/viscose blends and 100% viscose, and a silk habotai. They have many sharing and community features similar to Spoonflower. I used them for the book and was very impressed with the quality.

Stoff’n is another German printer. They print affordably with pigments onto several cotton and cotton blend types. Shipping is worldwide and there is no minimum. You can share, sell, and compete with your designs here too.

I got to meet Greta Songe at Fall Quilt Market, she is the nicest! Her first fabric collections with Marcus‘ new Studio 37 are now in stores. Great, inventive color combinations and sweet retro designs with hand-drawn touches. Her first two mini-collections are Kitschy Kitchen and the bike-riding themed Here to There.

Greta wrote me to share a peek at Apple Dee Doo Dah, which will come out this summer. This time, we get more coordinates and more great color mixes (and a song that won’t get out of your head. Was that the plan?)

Greta also has a ton of designs on Spoonflower – and over at the Spoonflower blog they’ve got an interview with her and are holding a giveaway of fat quarter bundles of her Marcus AND digital fabrics through Feb. 12.

Liberty of London has been dividing their seasonal Tana Lawn collections into unique and electic groupings, and for the last few collections, one of the groupings has been all digital. Botanical Garden is the name of this season’s digital group, and it features art by Mary Fedden, Hugo Grenville, and Rachel Pedder Smith, as well as house and freelance designers. I wanted to pull these out and highlight them so you might take a good close look at the depth and complexity achieved by the printing method. I can’t believe they’re the same cost at the regular fabrics! Digital textiles on the fashion runways have been all about “more is more,” and there is some of that here too, but the small scale or more monochromatic color palettes of some prints make them more wearable for more people.

The Ben the Illustrator Collection is actually a joint production of husband-and-wife team Ben and Fiona O’Brien. They offer fabrics digitally printed in the U.K., plus cushions and lampshades made from them. There are 12 prints available, printed on Cotton Half Panama (a type I’ve never heard of, and it’s not in my Dan River Dictionary of Textiles Terms either! Someone enlighten us!) I do know it’s 309 grams/sq meter (about 9oz/sq yard) and 147cm (57 inches) wide and suitable for soft furnishings, cushions, curtains, and upholstery. This collection is a shining example of a cool small business enabled by digital textile printing technology.
