Spring Quilt Market 2012: Alexander Henry – Fashion for Home and New Qualities

For a show that is primarily focused on quilting cottons, Alexander Henry took the opportunity to highlight their home decor weight fabrics. Twitter, Facebook and many a blog were lighting up with photos of this fantastic chair sculpture. The fact that none of the fabrics used were less than three to four years old was rather impressive as well.

What often separates Alexander Henry from most manufacturers is that they follow their own road versus going along with the majority. The collections they debuted were a mix of the cute, the

"This Way & That" – Scrappy Quilt

As an afterthought I decided to start a few blocks of a  new scrappy quilt to take with me to our annual guild retreat this weekend at Northbow Lodge.  A lot of you know that I enjoy making and using flying geese in a number of my quilts.  In particular I really like the "Square n' Square" technique by Jodi Barrows, and goodness knows I have a few scraps in my overflowing bin that are just crying out to be put into a quilt.

My other projects to work on this weekend are, of course, my Hunter Star

Airsoft Is Notsoft

First of all, if you haven’t yet read it, please check out the account of our paintball experience from two years ago.

The Family Goes Paintballing

It might provide a little context.

And now. Fast forward to yesterday.

To celebrate my nephew’s thirteenth birthday, the whole family—as well as a few friends—went to the city to play Airsoft, which is a sport in which participants engage in military-style combat using gnarly looking guns that shoot small plastic pellets. As I told you yesterday, my beloved loving loved ones have engaged for weeks in all manner of trash talking about the Airsoft

Spring Quilt Market 2012: Windham Fabrics

Known for more traditional designs and motifs, Windham scored the golden ticket when they signed Lotta Jansdotter. Her first licensed collection, Echo, was a hit and it’s rather safe to say that Bella, her second collection, will be no different. The colors – tangy orange, rich indigo, aqua, yellow and a warm gray – combine quite perfectly. She brought the crosshatch print back but other than that, it’s all new and ready to roll in any project. Releases in August, so save up now!

Fearless use of color

I recently purchased yet another vintage quilt top. It arrived today.  The use of color amazes me.  I don’t think I would have been able to so fearlessly put together all those colors.

Sometimes ignoring the rules works!

But not the rules of construction.

The top was machine pieced and the fabrics are a mix of cotton and poly blend solids.  Once the quilt is laid out it is obvious why it was never quilted. Poor construction.

The top is just

Backyard Progress

Zinna by tea pot

I know I've been absent from the blogosphere for a few days, but I have been busy. I have spent mornings in my backyard (well, part of the mornings), cleaning up the mess that the weather and good old Skipper have done. As it turned out, Skipper had dug just enough holes in just the right places that I had to do hardly any digging to plant my nandinas. I just
