Where I’ll Be at Quiltcon

I’m signing out for the week and going to Quiltcon! I’m moderating the panel discussion “All About Fabric Design” on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2:00-2:50. I hope to see you there. Please leave a comment with any questions you’d like me to bring up! Check out this ragtag bunch I have to attempt to keep under control, and wish me luck:

A Field Guide to Fabric Design: eBook Editions

Due to some unforeseen (but good!) circumstances, we will have to wait a little longer for the rest of Lauren‘s Quilt Market posts. In the meanwhile, I’ll resume the regular posting schedule and try to start catching you up on the fabric news that has built up in the weeks since Market.

First up, I was thrilled to find out that my book A Field Guide to Fabric Design is now available for Kindle, iBook, and

In Case You Missed It …

The recording of my live video chat on Reneepearson.com is here. We talked a lot about digital fabric printing (especially about the importance of color charts), I made a few embarrassing confessions, and showed how to use Illustrator’s Recolor Artwork tool. Great fun was had by all, I think! A big thanks to Laura Coyle and the Pearsons for bringing me on to their wonderful site.

I’m Going to Be on (Renee) TV!

I am excited to announce that I will be on ReneeTV, the live chat feature of ReneePearson.com this Wednesday, April 25, at 9pm Eastern U.S. time, as part of their Meet the Pros series. I’ll be talking about A Field Guide to Fabric Design and about color and digital textile printing, and doing a live tutorial of Illustrator’s Recolor Artwork tool (a tutorial that is in the book). We’d love for you to join us! It’s free and easy, and you can log in as a guest,

My Interview With Pattern Observer

Slow Blog Tour stop #2! Michelle Fifis of the highly magnificent blog Pattern Observer asked me to participate in a webinar interview. She had some students from her e-classes listening in and messaging questions to us at the end. I also ask Michelle about how she started Pattern Observer, and about her design work. She is a freelance surface pattern designer who works directly for companies, rather than going the licensing route. Both of these ways of doing business are still a bit mysterious to

A Field Guide to Fabric Design Is Out!

It’s official, the book is OUT! Pre-order-ers got their copies last week, and now it’s shipping immediately from Amazon. I received three boxes full this weekend, and I have to say that even though I have had an advance copy for some time, nothing prepares you for the thrill of seeing a big stack of them on your table. WOW. I wanted to take pictures of the boxes arriving and me opening them, but a) I wasn’t

Why, It’s a Forum!

The book is coming very soon! I made forum to serve as its companion, a place to go to ask questions about fabric design, to share your work, to find new resources and inspiration, and to be whatever else it morphs into. Once the book is out I plan to post downloads there, like free patterns, a screenprinting exposure test file, and more. Thanks very much to my early adopters — signups and postings have gone smoothly so far, so I’m ready to open it up to

Who Wants Postcards?

I can hardly believe it, but A Field Guide to Fabric Design will be out in just a couple months! Stash sent me a huge box of postcards so I can get my own promotions efforts rolling. If you’re planning on carrying the book in your shop and want to create some advance buzz, or will be flying in an open aircraft and want to rain some down on a major metropolitan area, just email me your mailing address and I’ll send you a stack. Let me

Lecien’s Fabulous Blooming, and Color Palettes

Get This Palette on Kuler

Lecien has a few 1930s-40s vintage reproduction/retro collections out this season, and this one, Fabulous Blooming, has to be my favorite.

I was struck by the sweet combination of different greens in the top print, and the use of gray as a neutral  – so characteristically 1930s-40s! It reminded me that, since working on the color chapter in my book, I have wanted to start a feature highlighting color palettes from fabrics. In the book I write about how to create

A Field Guide to Fabric Design

Guess what? I wrote a book! I’m in such a surreal state, being able to finally announce it and show you the cover! I can’t don’t think I can form a coherent introduction, so here’s a disconnected list.

It’s called A Field Guide to Fabric Design, and it is set for release in October of this year (it’s even available for pre-order on Amazon already). It’s published by Stash Books, an imprint of C&T.

It was of utmost importance to me to demystify repeating patterns. So the book gives
