Irish Inspiration

There is a warm spot in our hearts for St. Patrick's Day and Irish quilts. Last year we featured a little wall hanging with the Irish greeting, Céad Míle Fáilte (100,000 welcomes). This year our inspiration comes by way of Gyöngyi Váradi, a master quilter and member of the Hungarian Patchwork Society, who has created some of the most beautiful Irish quilts we've seen. She spent a year in Galway, Ireland and made quilts together with the Irish Patchwork Society. Her quilts have been featured in exhibitions around Europe.

Did you know that St. Patrick's Day is the most widely celebrated saints day in the world? It is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador and in Montserrat. Many other countries celebrate St. Patrick's Day with parades, green attire, green food and - occasionally - green beer.   Here are some free quilt patterns for shamrocks, Irish chains and more.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!!

So, in honor of my great grandfather, Timothy O'Brien, I'm having a giveaway!  Post a comment before midnight (EST) tonight, March 17th, 2011, all names will be entered in a draw, and the winner will receive a collection of green things!! The green thingies are still to be selected, so if you aren't a quilter, please let me know and I'll opt for less quilter and more Nova Scotia.
