A new inspiring Moby Dick

In 1996 when applying to be a VISTA volunteer in Appalachia I met my future husband and business partner Bill Kerr. Bill had just finished 10 yrs of living around the world and out of a backpack — literally he had just spent six months hiking the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine and living in a tent. He cooked me dinner in his tiny furnished studio apartment that was impressively spare. I asked about owning books and he said, “Why do I need to own books if I live across

We Love Color and The Solids Revolution

Many of the quilts we made when we started our company in 1999 were made with solids.

Outside the Box 1999

Raindrops 1999

Solids were hard to find then and we had to drive around to lots of shops to find them. We continued to make quilt after quilt with solids but it was a hard sell. In 2007 I pitched an idea to American Patchwork

The Red Fox – stitching series

A little while ago I sat and sketched a little fox.

He was cheeky & knowing, with long curling whiskers and big eyes.

I knew right from the start he would be red.

His name? The Red Fox.

Feb 20a

So a little sketch became my next new stitching series.

The Red Fox found friends, a few little hedgehogs, a lone squirrel and a precious little girl....he soon realised friends stick together and that sometimes he had to relax and take time out to close his eyes and dream.

Red Fox found that to dream

Inspiration: in theaters now!

(photo: Magnolia Pictures)

We rarely have time to go to movies but have been glad to have made the time to see two inspiring movies that are in theaters now.

The first is an indie film that you may have a hard time finding if you don’t live in a major city but is worth renting when it is eventually available on Netflix or elsewhere. If you can see it in the theater, though, it’s well worth the price of admission. It’s called Jiro Dreams of Sushi but sushi isn’t really the point of

Thoughts on Shapes

Lozenge Shape

Lozenge Shape

I really can’t figure out how my mind works. Sometimes I like the way it works, because it sends me off in a new creative direction.

I was making the Northwind block for the Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild A-B-C Challenge and got to the point that you see in the top left photo. All I had to do was put some larger triangles on the sides and I would have a nice tidy square, but this shape stopped me in my tracks.

I

Crafting with kids

Truth be told I am a sucker when it comes to crafty things and kids.  I love being crafty with my daughter and we have an entire craft box full of fun things to keep little fingers busy during the day or even if only for just a few hours.

She loves it.  I love it. Perfect match.

This week I found the ultimate Mummy & Daughter crafty thing. Fancy being able to buy a best friend in a box, I would have LOVED this when I was a kid.  I was excited, Isabelle was thrilled & so this morning the two

Magnolias

For those of you who have followed me for a while, you might remember these beauties that bloom outside my studio windows every late winter. The color and feel and shape of them is just unbelievable. Usually I try

New pattern – Paper Dolls

I would like to introduce you to a new girl in the studio, she likes to play with paper dolls - the type you cut out with scrap paper & scissors.  She made her way to the studio a few weeks ago and this picture was taken when I was picking colors for her creation.

Her name is Pip "the paper doll girl"

I had my mind set on a combination Woodland grey, green and pink with a little splash of red gingham and the picture below was taken as I was selecting the fabrics.
