It had been a while since I checked in on Dwellstudio‘s fabrics. The newest collections of interior wovens and prints are called Global Modern Luxe and Modern Color Theory. They are produced by Robert Allen and, hooray!, are available directly to the public from Dwellstudio and from various outlets online.
In the recent post on Banksia Bloom by Saffron Craig, Rebecca mentioned Utopia Goods as another textile producer featuring Australian flora and fauna in their designs. Flowering Gum, above, “features Bruce [Slorach]’s illustrated honeyeater birds feasting on the nectar of a feathered flowering gum nut. Some lost photos from Quilt Market! How I could let Echino fall through the cracks, I don’t know, but we’re all here together now and that’s what’s important. This season Etsuko Furuya is simultaneously releasing the latest iteration of her nature-themed collection AND more Ni-co, which is the more simple, graphic transportation-and-objects collection. We’re also getting some Decoro home dec prints on linen, oilcloth, and … mostexcitingnewsofquiltmarket, jacquards (that’s a link to ginapina‘s photo)! Birch Fabrics is growing by leaps and bounds. Go Birch Go! Coming this season they’re expanding into new substrates and bringing on new licensees, including a very huge name.
Jay-Cyn Designs will have three variations on a theme in three fabric types: organic quilting cotton, organic cotton canvas, and organic cotton knit. With Kallianthi, Dear Stella comes full circle. They brought classic home decor motifs and looks to quilting cotton, and now this collection includes a home dec fabrics. Dear Stella’s cotton sateen is a light and drapey, perfect for breezy curtains. Kallianthi mixes ikat and block-print-like designs.
The last designer enclave on Michael Miller Island was the one that created perhaps the most buzz at Market, since it marks such a departure for Michael Miller. Trenna Travis‘ Bekko marks their entrée into home decor fabrics. Bekko’s basecloth is a lovely cotton sateen that hits that sweet spota — it’s intended for light home decor like pillows, window dressings, kitchen and tabletop textiles, yet it’s light enough for quilting, apparel (like jackets, skirts), and all manner of crafts. Bekko feels preppy, yet fresh — easy, basic geometrics (and solids)
Premier Prints was at Quilt Market for the first time! They had loads of awesome fabric in a variety of different materials and weights. Many of their fabric options lend themselves to a home decor market, but they also had cotton prints for quilters. Michele, who spent a decade as an interior designer, was swooning over their offerings.

One of the many interesting things Dear Stella is doing is translating interior design motifs and sensibilities into the quilting/lifestyle fabric domain. These two collections underline this idea — Portico (above), a modern yet soft black-and-tan floral-based collection, and Kallianthi, inspired by ikat and block prints. The latter will have a set of home decor sateens — how’s about that for full circle?
Zak + Fox is a new-to-the-scene textile and interior design company founded by Zak Profera. Fox is the alias for Zak’s dog Shinji. He writes about the inspiration for the company: “I loved the idea of a boy and his dog traversing the globe, unearthing ancient treasures, and bringing them back to modernity. There’s an adventurous, romantic spirit in the archetype, and it offers room to create engaging designs with narrative roots.” Profera’s designs are indeed international, historical, classic, modern, and have a masculine edge. Dutch label Tas-ka has a new collection of fabrics and textile products called Schemer, Lommer, Dageraad, inspired by “the elusiveness of what happens in the early morning and evening, with the clear colours of the rising and setting sun and the darkness of the night.” The six prints are each printed on a 4 oz/sq yard (140 g/meter) cotton and a 6oz/sq yard (210 g/meter) cotton for different applications. They are now available in the Tas-ka web shop and it does look like they ship internationally.
