Arvidssons is another Swedish fabric company producing textiles in the great Scandinavian mod/supergraphics tradition. This third-generation family business has been in operation since 1949. You can keep up with each new season’s fabrics and products on their Facebook page, and buy them retail from The Swedish Fabric Company and Scandinavian Textiles on Etsy.

Arounna Khounnoraj designs the textiles and she has a new collection available now, that was created and hand-screenprinted with her studio assistant. Each of these beautiful prints is available in several colorways. They are online now and also at the brick & mortar shop at 798 Dundas Street West in Toronto.

Maria in Sydney, Australia handprints fabrics under the name Blueberry Ash. The linen and cotton fabrics are printed with water-based inks and sold on Etsy to a worldwide audience. Maria is also involved with the company Digital Fabrics, which I will have to add to the list of digital print bureaus!

Artek: ABC Collection

sienabyalvaraalto

Finnish company Artek has a history going back to 1935. They continue to produce legendary designer Alvar Aalto’s furniture and lighting pieces today. He designed the textile pattern Siena in 1954 and it has been used continually since then — it’s an example of the staying power of simplicity and versatility. Artek recently introduced a home accessories collection called the abc Collection, all centered around Siena and h55, a pattern designed by Aalto’s wife Elissa. The abc Collection includes Siena and h55 on cotton, a heavier weight cotton canvas,

Traditional Mexican Woven Fabrics

pinkorangeyellow

With simple geometrics and neon colors being so of-the-moment, maybe people will take a second look at traditional woven fabrics from Mexico. I don’t know what I’d do with these, but I’m really attracted to them. Ideas?

All these and many more can be found at MexFabricSupplies on Etsy.

New Knits at Ottobre

tigers

It has been a while, so I checked in on Ottobre‘s Etsy shop to see the newest knit prints. These are definitely a splurge, but you are getting quality fabric from Europe in unique prints, and hey, kid’s clothes don’t use too much yardage, right?

Blije Olifantje

lecien sunbonnet

I’ve thought before that it would be a great (and different) concept for a fabric shop to hoard fabric until it is sold out everywhere else, and only then put that stock up for sale. It’d be extremely difficult to pull that off without a crystal ball, though. Somehow, Blije Olifanje (Happy Elephant) on Etsy seems to be in possession of one. It’s a shop specializing in rare, out-of-print, and hard-to-find fabrics. No ultra-coveted Jennifer Paganelli Loopy Vintage Floral, but lots of Yuwa and Kei, Heather Ross, Michael

Mociun Fabrics

Online shop Beklina has exclusive, limited stock fabric yardage from Brooklyn-based designer Caitlin Mociun. These silks and hand-printed fabrics would be worth the splurge — I’m not sure she is producing fashion collections any longer (jewelry seems to be the focus now) and her prints have been very influential in the contemporary surface design world.

The Link Collective

I don’t typically cover “fabric with hems” here, but furoshiki are so versatile and these prints are so exciting, I thought I’d cap off the week with this small diversion. Furoshiki are multipurpose Japanese cloths that are used as gift wrap, scarves, bags, and anything else you can think of. The Link Collective brings traditional Japanese craftsmanship together with international designers and artists, including the U.K.’s Hanna Waldron and Lucinda Newton Dunn. The hand-screenprinted furoshiki and accessories are available (or expected to be, this month) through their
