Puti de Pome Sketch Stripe

I love this simple scribble stripe from the Puti de Pome collection from Kiyohara — though the collection is ultra cute and kid-themed this stripe could be anything you wanted it to be. It’s a cotton-linen blend, in two colorways, spotted at Superbuzzy.

Cosmo Alphabet Print

I love flash cards and old school primers. This cotton-linen alphabet print from Cosmo also makes me think of board game graphics. Spotted at JapanLovelyCrafts on Etsy.

Echino Fall 2011

There is a kind of dance in the design world over what the next “hip” animal will be. Seeing the Echino Fall 2011 collection, I imagine Etsuko Furuya popping and locking herself into the center ring and doing her classic moves. Birds. Deer. Owls. And everyone thinks, daaaaaamn, some say they’re played out now, but no one can do those like her. Then suddenly, she throws down an okapi. Bam! Deal with that. Cockatiels! Never saw that coming. Then she points at you as she retreats back into

Utako Yamada: Karel Capek

Utako Yamada is the Japanese illustrator behind a tea-centric product brand called Karel Capek, named after the Czech author who invented the term “robot”. These are not the first of Yamada’s designs to be put on fabric by Kokka, but it might be the largest and most cohesive collection to date. These fabrics are a 85% cotton, 15% linen blend canvas. I’d love to hear what you’d do with the big busy border print — it’s awfully cute!

Melody Miller: Ruby Star Spring

Ruby Star Spring, Melody Miller‘s second collection for Kokka, is now arriving in stores, and I can’t wait to get my hands on some. I love the pixelly designs and Melody’s inventive colorways. It’s a 62″ cotton-linen blend in a new lighter weight. “Bee” (center) is very large-scale (see this picture for reference) — the bee’s wingspan is a little over 1 foot — and it looks like it’s being sold by the 27″ panel by most shops.

And have you seen Melody’s preview of

This week, there was so much to cover, I broke this post up into two parts. Here’s part I.

Japanese Fabric of the Week: Floating Animals

Here’s another Japanese fabric that is at once adorable and puzzling, and in the end even more adorable because it’s puzzling … these poor creatures seem to be hanging by their necks from the balloons, and then what of the ones without a balloon? And of course with the two-way print, some are floating and some are falling. This cotton-linen blend can be found at This and That From Japan (along with the great Ed Emberley fabrics I posted last week).
