I’ve been thinking a lot lately about “collections” as applied to designing things like fabric and projects for books — why we make them and how consumers respond to them. Sarah Fielke: On the Pond

spotlight-promo-onthepond

Sarah Fielke‘s newest collection is for Spotlight, a fabric store chain with locations in Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore. There she joins the ranks of Denyse Schmidt’s DS Quilts collection, Prints Charming, and Reprodepot. The colors are perfectly spring for us (though they’re deep into summer there) and I like how subtle the water theme is. Sarah has these fabrics for sale on her website for customers in the non-Spotlighted countries of the world.

And only a month until Sarah’s new book comes out, too!

Utopia Goods

upholstery_fabric_floweringgum_australia

In the recent post on Banksia Bloom by Saffron Craig, Rebecca mentioned Utopia Goods as another textile producer featuring Australian flora and fauna in their designs. Flowering Gum, above, “features Bruce [Slorach]’s illustrated honeyeater birds feasting on the nectar of a feathered flowering gum nut. If you look closely, there are different varieties of honeyeaters on the backdrop of a subtle organic polka dot.” Waratah, below, is based on a bush found in New South Wales. “Its unusual and beautiful form has been the inspiration for the decorative arts and it’s been found on pressed metal ceilings, carved

Saffron Craig: Banksia Bloom

banksia-bloom-strikeoff-all

Banksia Bloom is the newest GOTS certified 100% organic cotton collection by Saffron Craig for Fern Textiles. I know I’ve heard of these “kookaburras” and knew they were Australia-related but had no idea what they were, now thanks to Saffron I know they are birds that frequent rivers. The collection is also populated with Australian exotica like gum flowers and banksia trees. It’s an education, beautiful design, and sustainability all in one! The fabrics are available now directly from the Saffron Craig shop, and stateside by Honeybegood.
