Fall Quilt Market 2012: Andover Fabrics Part I

Over the past several years, Andover has been making a name for themselves on the modern scene by offering fabrics with a fresh perspective, and they did not disappoint this time around. Andover unveiled three new collections this year at Fall Market: Lucky Penny by Alison Glass, Asbury by Thomas Knauer, and Constellations by Lizzy House.

Lucky Penny is a jewel-toned collection of exotic florals and architectural prints, reminding one of a trip to a beautiful old city. It comes in three colorways, Morning, Noon, and Night, with a large-scale print and accompanying coordinates. Mural is the showstopping pattern in this collection, while the simpler Bike Path coordinate prints are sure to become favorites. Lucky Penny will be available any day now.

Asbury is a nostalgic look at designer Thomas Knauer’s childhood dreams of the Asbury Park, NJ boardwalk. It features ice cream cones, bowling pins, bumper cars, and other amusement park findings in a surreal, dream-like color palette. Asbury features a cheater fabric in each colorway, as well as a fun text print. Asbury will be available in December.

Finally, Constellations is the much anticipated new collection by Andover’s (and possibly Quilt Market’s) youngest designer, Lizzy House. Constellations comes in three colorways featuring Lizzy’s signature foxes and is accompanied by new colors of her beloved Pearl Bracelets print to coordinate. Constellations will be available in December.

Serendipity Quilt Store

Yesterday, the sun was shy at first, letting the clouds fool us into thinking we'd better change our plans for the day. Before I could even think about alternate activities, boys and husband were already at the beach. Realizing this would be my only opportunity, I quickly left to visit my favorite quilt store in Delaware: Serendipity.

For the last two years, I have been following their adventures as they built and finally moved into a new location in September 2011, just a hop and a skip away from their previous spot. With 1,800 sq ft and over 3,000 bolts of tempting fabric, I felt I had arrived in heaven. Serendipity features such popular lines as Hoffman, Timeless Treasures, Moda, P&B, Marcus Bros., Windham, Bernatex, Dear Stella, Henry Glass, Maywood, Andover, Michael Miller, Robert Kaufman, and more. I wandered through the store for ONLY two and a half hours, ignoring the impatient attempts from my iPhone to bring me back to earth.

Check out this cool way to display their samples: Finished wood with special nails installed close to the ceiling allow staff to easily clip and hang quilts.

While I was at the store, I noticed these two ladies 'carting' bolts and bolts of fabric to the cutting tables. After about one hour, their tab came to $3,620!!! I called my husband and asked if I could spend the same amount. "No way", he said. I decided then that anything I spent BELOW that would be approved!!! When he sees the credit card bill he will be relieved I did not spend that much, and any complaints on his part will be met with: "See how much money I saved you?" :-)

Gotta go now. More on my purchases later! Enjoy the 4th of July!

Lizzy House: Hello Pilgrim

Hello Pilgrim is Lizzy House‘s newest. Most (all?) of her previous collections have been centered on conversational prints, but Hello Pilgrim marks a turn to a more classic assortment of florals and geometrics. Well, there’s butterflies, but butterflies are about as floral as you can get in a novelty motif. These prints are everything I love about vintage feedsacks, but made totally forward looking with the Lizzy’s keen eye. And she always has lots of fun projects to celebrate her collections on her blog, so be sure to keep a look out.

Fall Quilt Market 2011: Lizzy House

Clearly people can’t get enough Lizzy House, since she had not-one-not-two-but-three collections showing at Quilt Market! I’m so excited for them all: Outfoxed, already in stores; her Halloween collection (those ghosts! The candy corn triangles!); and Hello Pilgrim, which might not be out till the latter half of next year, but with such classic motifs and such pitch perfect retro-graphic style, no way will I ever get tired of looking at it.

Garden Party by Jane Dixon for Andover

Garden Party is the second collection by Jane Dixon for Andover — her first was Desert Bloom, which caught my eye at last Fall’s quilt market for its funky take on cacti, which I think are seriously underused motifs as far as botanicals go.

P.S., I am retiring New Release Tuesday because they’ve become kind of a chore to put together and don’t highlight these great new collections in the way they deserve to be. My goal instead (once I get back from a shortish maternity leave) is to feature a new quilting collection each day M-F — I do think it can be done! Retailers, you are still welcome to mention in the comments if you are carrying the collection in your shop.

Preview: Dazzle by Melissa Averinos

Dazzle is Melissa Averino‘s second collection for Andover, which will be shown at Quilt Market next week and be in stores next month. A gorgeous and compact collection (six prints in two color stories, teal and pink). It is quite of hypnotizing, isn’t it? I love the light teal and navy with brown combination, and of course the pink colorway is 100% Melissa, so sunny and bright (but still a little subversive).
